It also drives cognitive ease, making us more likely to believe statements that are easy to process (e.g., printed in clear font, repeated).

System 1’s tendency to construct a coherent narrative from whatever information is available, without seeking more, can lead to overconfidence. For instance, if you hear a rumor, System 1 might immediately weave it into your understanding, even if it’s baseless, making it hard to dislodge.

2.2 Understanding System 2 (Slow, Deliberative)

System 2 allocates attention to the effortful mental activities that demand it, including complex computations. Its operations are often associated with the subjective experience of agency, choice, and concentration.

  1. Effortful & Slow: It kicks in for tasks requiring concentration, such as solving complex math problems, comparing insurance plans, or monitoring your behavior in a social situation.
  2. Deliberate Control: System 2 has the capacity for self-control and can override the impulses of System 1, but it is “lazy” and prefers to conserve energy.
  3. Logical Reasoning: It’s where logical thought, statistical reasoning, and careful analysis reside.
  4. Limited Capacity: System 2’s attention is a limited resource; engaging in one demanding task can impair performance on another.

System 2 is engaged when you are asked to remember a 7-digit phone number, park in a tight space, or fill out a complicated form. It demands attention and is easily distracted if attention is diverted.

Because System 2 is effortful, we often default to System 1. When we are mentally fatigued or distracted, our ability to engage System 2 diminishes, making us more susceptible to System 1’s biases.

Kahneman details numerous biases that arise from the interplay of System 1 and System 2, often due to System 1’s shortcuts going unchecked by a lazy System 2.

  1. Anchoring Effect: Tendency to rely too heavily on the first piece of information (the “anchor”) offered when making decisions.
  2. Availability Heuristic: Overestimating the likelihood of events that are more easily recalled from memory.
  3. Representativeness Heuristic: Judging the probability of an event by how similar it is to a prototype, often ignoring base rates.

After seeing news reports about plane crashes, people may overestimate the risk of flying, even though statistically, driving is far more dangerous. The vividness of the recalled events makes them seem more common.

To truly evaluate a belief, actively seek out evidence that disproves it, rather than just supporting it. This forces System 2 to engage critically with opposing viewpoints.

2.4 Improving Decision Making

While biases are inherent, Kahneman provides strategies to mitigate their impact and foster more rational thinking, especially in critical situations.

  1. Recognise the Signals: Learn to identify situations where System 1 is likely to make an error (e.g., complex problems, high stakes, time pressure, emotional arousal).
  2. Slow Down: Deliberately engage System 2 by pausing, reflecting, and questioning your initial intuition.
  3. Use Checklists and Procedures: For important decisions, formal processes can counteract System 1’s biases.
  4. Seek Outside Perspectives: Consult others who are not emotionally invested in the decision and can offer a more objective “outside view.”

Kahneman’s Prospect Theory, developed with Amos Tversky, describes how individuals make decisions under risk. Its core insights:

  1. Reference Dependence: Outcomes are evaluated as gains or losses relative to a reference point (not absolute wealth).
  2. Diminishing Sensitivity: The psychological impact of a gain or loss diminishes as its magnitude increases (e.g., the difference between $0 and $100 feels greater than between $1000 and $1100).
  3. Loss Aversion: Losses loom larger than corresponding gains. The pain of losing $100 is generally greater than the pleasure of gaining $100. This explains why people are risk-averse in the domain of gains but risk-seeking in the domain of losses.

The framing effect demonstrates that the way information is presented significantly impacts our choices, even if the underlying facts are the same. For example:

  • A surgery with a “90% survival rate” is perceived more positively than one with a “10% mortality rate,” despite identical outcomes.

Being aware of framing helps you analyze decisions based on substance rather than presentation, and also allows you to frame information effectively when communicating.

Kahneman distinguishes between two ‘selves’ that determine our perception of well-being:

  1. The Experiencing Self: Lives in the present, registers fleeting moments of pain and pleasure. It’s the one that feels the immediate joy of a sunny day or the discomfort of a long line.
